Today was Dr. Seuss's Birthday celebration. 

For those not too familiar with Dr. Seuss, that is the pen name of Theodor Seuss Geisel, the famous children writer.

Geisel is famous for inventing a playful method of reading that has gained immense popularity among children and elementary school teachers. He wrote more than 40 books in life, with the most famous being “The Cat in the Hat” which he wrote using only 236 words and according to one estimate, 1in 4 American children receive one of Dr. Seuss’s book as the first book in their life.

My students wanted to know more information about him and if he had a website.  We looked him up on the internet. They were very dissapointed when we read that he is no longer alive. Who is going to make more Dr. Seuss books?  Some want to collect all of his books. We also found his official website.   The site has a lot of different things. Kids loved it.   http://www.seussville.com


I must confess that I do not  like all of Dr. Seuss books.  There are a few I do read more because I can do fun activites after reading them. Green Egss and Ham is one of them.  I hope to be able to post later about our upcoming activites with this book.

My students on the other hand, love all of Dr. Seuss books.  Rhymes have a way of enchanting children. I must read what appeals to my students so this week we read Dr. Seuss books!!

Acerca de Dr. Seuss:
Un poco a raíz de cintas recientes como El Grinch (How The Grinch Stole Christmas, EUA, 2000) o El gato (The Cat in the Hat, EUA, 2003), es que el nombre del Dr. Seuss empieza a resultar un poco más familiar para los hispanoamericanos. En Estados Unidos, sin embargo, es toda una celebridad y prácticamente no hay niño gringo que no sepa quién es él.

El Dr. Seuss, bautizado en realidad como Theodore Geisel en 1904 y fallecido en 1991, es, sin duda, uno de los autores e ilustradores infantiles más reconocidos del siglo XX; su obra en este renglón abarca 44 libros poblados de singulares dibujos y atractivas narraciones generalmente confeccionadas en verso. Entre sus obras más conocidas están la ya citada historia del Grinch y la relativa a Horton, un elefante que descubre una microscópica comunidad de diminutos seres de quienes se convierte en protector.

El Dr. Seuss, que fue el seudónimo que adoptó en su faceta de escritor infantil, cuenta además con una notable trayectoria en otros campos, y destacó también como caricaturista político, periodista y documentalista. Sin embargo, son sus cuentos para niños los que lo han convertido en una celebridad que cada día cobra más popularidad, y cuya fama se extiende fuera de los límites de su país de origen.
